By Monica Kapur, CEO of Goldies
My name is Monica Kapur, and I am a second-generation Indian American living in sunny Los Angeles. I am a West Coast gal- I have an undergraduate degree in marketing from the University of Washington, and an MBA from University of CA, Irvine. My strengths and passion lie in relationship building, branding, and digital strategy. In my spare time, you’ll find me on a plane to somewhere exotic, at SoulCycle, or at the beach roller skating followed by an oceanfront brunch with friends. I’m constantly on the go and my mind is always on overdrive. I have a pretty active lifestyle, and sometimes it’s hard to maintain a balance between body and mind.
This pretty active lifestyle comes with consequences. In the summer of 2019, I was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis. It came as a shock- I had gone through some life changing personal events and just thought my body was reacting poorly to the stress. I saw several doctors and they immediately prescribed me a slew of medications and treatment options that had life-altering side effects (like hair loss and infertility from a chemotherapy drug, for example). I had another close friend diagnosed with it about six months prior, and said there were more natural ways of curing the disease. So, after some research, I opted out of taking them and decided I was going to suffer through the pain and try to cure it naturally.
In between the chaos of my diagnosis, these life changing personal events also gave me crippling anxiety. I wasn’t leaving my apartment for days on end- the only vitamin D I would get was sitting by the pool or going to the gym in my building. I’d have miniscule social interactions and would manage to squeak out a “hi” to my neighbors- which was how I met Allen Yates, Founder of GoldiesTM. We shared a few cocktails at the pool and I told him my story, upon which he asked if I’d ever tried CBD (Cannabidiol) for my rheumatoid arthritis symptoms. Of course, I had not- I was trying vegan dieting, less alcohol consumption, various vitamin supplements. I had seen some improvement in my symptoms, but not enough.
I had always associated CBD with marijuana. Because of medical marijuana licenses readily available or the recent legalization in California, I’ve had an exposure to marijuana since my early 20’s. We would smoke and get high, generally leading to some kind of low that would involve a hangover and not leaving my bed for a few days. Since my job is remote and I’m often working from home, I needed something to sustain the pain all day long without the grogginess I felt after ingesting marijuana. After meeting Allen and hearing about GoldiesTM, I soon learned CBD is so much more than experiencing a “high” that is actually associated with Tetrahydrocannabinol (also known as THC).
I did a little investigating on CBD vs THC- I was very skeptical to try it! I found that both CBD and THC are compounds found within the marijuana plant that bind with receptors in the brain. THC is a psychoactive ingredient (hence, the “high”), while CBD is not, and actually dampens the psychoactive effects. CBD can also be found in hemp plants. This means that CBD does not alter your state of mind when using it. CBD extract is generally mixed with another kind of organic oil (coconut, palm, olive, etc.) to produce CBD oil. This oil is then put into a variety of forms, including but not limited to: oils & tinctures (most common), creams, lotions, capsules, edibles, and vapes.
CBD has been medically proven to help with symptoms like pain, epilepsy, inflammation, various neurological disorders, nausea, cancer, anxiety, and the list goes on. For my arthritis, my main symptoms are pain and inflammation (swelling of my hands, feet, joints). The pain was also correlated with anxiety- I was having a hard time getting out of bed and accomplishing simple tasks throughout my day. Allen recommended I try the GoldiesTM full spectrum capsules: a pill that delivers the CBD in its purest form, derived from hemp plants and formulated with all the beneficial cannabinoids. Hard to believe, but I felt relief almost instantly.
Before I met Allen and discovered GoldiesTM, I went from having an introverted, pain, and anxiety ridden summer, to spending the latter half of 2019 traveling the globe. In July, I couldn’t even get out of bed—and by the end of September, I spent 3 consecutive days backpacking in Yosemite. My joints were so swollen after the first day, I thought I would need to be airlifted back to Los Angeles. But a little bit of the GoldiesTM full-spectrum tincture, I was as good as new the next morning, and we were able to continue with our hike! After starting these CBD treatments, I am back to my regular, active lifestyle, and it feels so good to be myself again.
Ironically, even the GoldiesTM brand is inspired by a similar philosophy by which I live my life: our most ideal state exists in balance and alignment between our body and mind. This foundation is thought to be unobtainable for many due to physical pain, anxiety, stress of everyday life, past trauma and injury. And so, GoldiesTM now represents a very important part of my everyday lifestyle. It has truly help me overcome my obstacles and find my balance.
And in finding my balance, my naturally budding friendship with Allen has become a business venture. He approached me with the opportunity to start this new role as CEO of GoldiesTM. And who better to represent the brand than someone who has tested the products and seen the effects of CBD firsthand? As an added benefit, I now get to utilize my professional strengths outside of my normal daily career. Not only do I love the variety of products, but I love what the GoldiesTM brand represents. GoldiesTM and CBD has brought the “high” back in my life… I am excited to be on this journey and sharing it with you!
